Cash boost for The Breakfast Club

A Moreton Bay charity that provides free meals and other much-needed support services for people who are experiencing homelessness and other disadvantages has received a welcomed cash boost.

The Breakfast Club was one of 32 Queensland charities to benefit from more than $725,000 in funding from Queensland’s largest philanthropic organisation, Queensland Gives.

They received a total of $13,000 in the latest round of the Queensland Gives Organizational Capacity Building funding program, which assists charities develop their structures, systems, people and skills in order to deliver improved outcomes.

Michelle Gilchrist from The Breakfast Club said they were grateful for the funding. 

"We are very grateful to have been successful with our Queensland Gives grant application. The funds will be used in the development of our Strategic Plan in preparation for our tenancy of the Moreton Bay Housing and Homelessness Hub," Michelle said. 

"We will be working to strengthen the organisation and ensure we have everything that is necessary for a successful transition to the new building."

Queensland Gives CEO Tara Castle said every dollar given to charities helps create stronger, happier and healthier communities in the future.

“Our Organisational Capacity Building grants are all about helping to future-proof these wonderful charities so they can keep doing their invaluable work in communities throughout Queensland,” Tara said.

“The unique structure and purpose of Queensland Gives allows us to be a secure, permanent and perpetual source of funding for charities, which in turn gives them the ongoing security of knowing they can continue to fund their community-focused programs.

“All donations to Queensland Gives – large or small – have long term benefits for charities throughout the state and all donations over $2 are tax deductible.

“In effect, anyone who donates to Queensland Gives is giving to Queenslanders for generations to come. It really is the gift that keeps on giving.”

Other state-wide charities that also received funding include Rosies Youth Mission Inc, SmartPups Assistance Dogs, Hear and Say Ltd, Stationery Aid, the Pyjama Foundation, Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland, and Australian Kookaburra Kids Foundation,

Queensland Gives was established in 1997 as a charitable fund by former Queensland Premier Mike Ahern AO with seed funding of just $300,000.

The fund now has more than $132 million in its trust.

This financial year, Queensland Gives will distribute more than $5 million to more than 320 charity organisations across the state.

Donating to Queensland Gives is a different way of giving. Donations are pooled and invested with the income earned from the investments given to Queensland charities.
