Catch up on culture this summer

Moreton Bay City Council’s galleries, libraries and museums have a host of fascinating and entertaining experiences on offer throughout summer.

From a thought-provoking exhibition exploring the complex relationships Indigenous Australian artists continue to have with objects, to an inclusive, playful, sensory experience showcasing the talents of local artist Martin Edge, there are many free experiences to explore.

I, Object

CABOOLTURE REGIONAL ART GALLERY UNTIL FEBRUARY 17, 2024. FREE ENTRY

I, Object considers the many complex relationships Indigenous Australian artists continue to have with objects – from the histories informing their creation to the social and cultural consequences of their collection.

The exhibition demonstrates the great pride and inspiration of inherited cultural practices and historical Indigenous objects, and reveals the difficulties posed by their collection and estrangement.

I, Object features contemporary painting, sculpture, and installation by leading Queensland artists Vernon Ah Kee, Tony Albert, Michael Boiyool Anning, Fiona Foley, Danie Mellor, Christian Thompson, Warraba Weatherall and others alongside 20 historical shields, boomerangs and clubs.

PINE RIVERS ART GALLERY UNTIL MARCH 16, 2024. FREE ENTRY

See the world through the eyes of local artist Martin Edge. The Pine Rivers Art Gallery becomes an inclusive, playful, sensory experience of Martin’s wonderous world. Drawing from Martin's memories, All the best, from Martin Edge will share moments from his life, be they everyday, whimsical, or monumental.

This project has been produced in collaboration with Pia Robinson, Founder of The Culture Crusader, working with a number of neurodivergent artists and creatives to transport you into the wonderful world of Martin Edge.

Martin Edge is a celebrated painter who has been working as a professional artist for the past 15 years. Exhibiting consistently since 2008, Martin has earned national and international recognition. Besides his art practice, Martin is a proud ambassador for Autism Queensland.

All the best, from Martin Edge is an inclusive arts experience developed in partnership with City of Moreton Bay, The Culture Crusader and artist, Martin Edge.

15 Artists 2023

REDCLIFFE ART GALLERY UNTIL FEBRUARY 10, 2024. FREE ENTRY

15 Artists is an annual acquisitive prize developed to enhance City of Moreton Bay's Art Collection and exhibition program.

A calendar favourite, each year, Council invites 15 artists to take part in the exhibition. The winning artist is awarded $20,000 and their work is acquired into Council’s Art Collection. The exhibition highlights recent works by Australian artists, presenting diverse voices and ideas.

Beach Couture: A Haute Mess

Plastic pollution has become ubiquitous in our oceans and on our shores. Beach Couture is a collection of wearable pieces made of trash collected from beaches and oceans.

It makes visible, in a grotesquely amusing fashion, what is often overlooked - but shouldn’t be. The works highlight a growing problem - and provoke action.

Taking Flight: Amazing migratory shorebirds

BRIBIE ISLAND SEASIDE MUSEUM, DECEMBER 15, 2023 – MARCH 10, 2024, FREE ENTRY

Each year almost 20,000 migratory shorebirds visit the Pumicestone Passage. The passage is an essential rest stop on their 20,000km round-trip between Australia and their breeding grounds in the Arctic Circle. To survive their journey, shorebirds need to rest and refuel. This is when they can face some of their biggest challenges.

Taking Flight is an interactive exhibition for the whole family. Have fun and be amazed as you enter the extraordinary world of migratory shorebirds.

The great Aussie backyard

PINE RIVERS HERITAGE MUSEUM, DECEMBER 16, 2023 – MARCH 16 18, 2024. FREE ENTRY

When we think of the traditional Aussie backyard, many of us conjure up images of hot summers, barbecues, a Hills Hoist or a friendly game of cricket. We also think of space but, since the 1990s, Australian backyards have been shrinking in size. What impact is this having on our lifestyles and the environment?

Explore the evolution of the backyard from the outhouse to the outdoor room. Discover ways to make your backyard wildlife-friendly and create your own backyard invention. Spend time playing backyard games too. A fun interactive exhibition for all ages.

This exhibition is developed by Moreton Bay Regional Council.
