Kenny targets points over milestone
Kenny Bromwich says it will be “pretty cool” to chalk up another career landmark on Thursday - but refuses to dwell on personal achievements.
The experienced Dolphins forward will reach 250 NRL games when he runs out at Kayo Stadium against South Sydney Rabbitohs (kick-off 7.50pm).
It will be the culmination of 12 years in the top flight with Melbourne Storm (2013-22, 216 games, 28 tries) and Dolphins (2023-24, 33 games, 4 tries).
The 32-year-old said of his milestone: “I never thought I’d chalk up 100, but to play 250 … at this club too ... it’s pretty cool.
“I haven’t really had time to reflect on it. I usually take it week by week (and) just try to get the win. I’ll probably reflect on milestone games later on.”
Bromwich’s first concern is getting Dolphins back to winning ways after defeats in their last two games – and four of the last five outings.
They will be without Origin stars Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow and Felise Kaufusi, as well as hooker Jeremy Marshall-King, who has two fractures in a foot.
But Dolphins are still sixth on the NRL ladder – just two points behind Roosters in third and just two ahead of Dragons down in 10th place.
The Rabbitohs, who will be coached by Wayne Bennett next season, are 13th yet head to Redcliffe on the back of five successive wins.
“We have been missing them (Hammer and Kaufusi),” Bromwich said, “and had quite a few injuries this year too.
“Players have been stepping into those roles – like Trai Fuller - and doing a good job. We’ll look to those guys (again) and try to get the win without the Origin guys.
“I don’t like thinking about losing a player and how it’s going to affect us. Whoever we have, we put into that position and do the best we can.
“What’s happened (to Marshall-King) has happened.”
However, winger Jack Bostock returns for Thursday’s clash with South Sydney after following the NRL concussion protocols.
The 20-year-old, who has 13 tries this season, was injured making a tackle in the third minute of Dolphins’ 30-24 loss to the Storm in Round 16.
As a result, he had to miss Round 17 – the 26-6 defeat by Dragons – and then wait a week longer with last week’s bye round.
