Redcliffe’s Kyle Evans will have second in his sights when the 2024 Australian Formula Open (AFO) series wraps up next month.

In his debut AFO season, Evans moved up to second overall with a battling display at Sydney Motorsport Park over the weekend.

The 20-year-old Gilmour Racing driver took second place for the AFO Round Six, behind Ryan MacMillan, who won all three weekend races.

MacMillan has 244 points and the 2024 AFO crown, but winning the feature race has given Evans 169 points, leapfrogging Miles Bromley on 163.

The battle to see who finishes runner-up behind MacMillan will be decided at Phillip Island Circuit in Victoria on November 28-30.

Evans may have a six-point cushion over Bromley, but Beau Russell, currently in fourth, also has a chance of making the top three.

Next month's finale will also be a return to the state where Evans made a winning start back to his AFO career with victory at Sandown Park.

Evans qualified third for Saturday’s opening race in Sydney, but a blistering start saw him hit the front by turn one (see video below).

MacMillan and Thomas Gallagher eventually found a way through with Evans taking third. The same podium followed in race two.

However, a slip by Gallagher on lap seven of Sunday’s feature race, gave Evans a chance which he took to finish second, behind MacMillan.

It keeps the Redcliffe resident on track for his pre-season goal of finishing in the top three, despite being one of the most inexperienced drivers in the series.
