Sharn signs new Roar deal
Sharn Freier, the A-League and Matildas star whose career started in Moreton Bay, has signed a new two-year deal with Brisbane Roar.
It follows a stellar 2023-24 Liberty A-League season, Matildas debut in April and Olympic bow in Paris less than two weeks ago!
“I’m excited to be re-signing with Roar. Brisbane is my home, and I love playing here in front of the amazing fans that show up each week,” Freier said.
“It’s always a privilege to wear the orange jersey and I’m excited to be able to get the opportunity to help the team build from last season.”
Born in Redcliffe, Freier went to Pine Rivers State High School and started playing with Pine Rivers United before joining Moreton Bay United (now Moreton City Excelsior).
At Moreton Bay she won the NPL Under 15 title in 2016 alongside Indiah-Paige Riley, who played for New Zealand at the Paris Olympics.
Freier returned to Moreton Bay as a senior in 2021, but suffered an ACL injury and was out for 12 months before bouncing back with Roar in 2022-23 playing 16 games.
However, last season the 23-year-old made her mark on the left wing, starting all 22 games, scoring two goals and having five assists.
Freier won four awards at the club’s Season Awards Night, including Player of the Year (Kate McShea Medal), Young Player of the Year, Player’s Player and Fans’ Player of the Year.
That form caught the eye of Matildas’ coaches. In April she made her debut late in the game against Mexico and last month had her first start and goal in a pre-Olympic friendly against Canada.
After originally being an Olympic squad reserve, Freier replaced injured Tameka Yallop and made her Olympic debut in a 3-0 loss to Germany in Round 1.
