Storm warning fail for Moreton Bay

A severe thunderstorm warning from Moreton Bay City Council’s Moreton Alert system was again late in being issued yesterday afternoon as storms hit part of the region.

Many residents didn’t receive the warning for ‘damaging wind, hail, lightning or heavy rainfall that could result in flash flooding’ until 6pm, when the storms had already passed.

It follows backlash after severe storms lashed the northern part of the city earlier this month and no warnings, specific to Moreton Bay, were issued ahead of heavy rain and hail.

At the time, Council said it was demanding answers from the Bureau of Meteorology.

After last night’s warning failure, Council issued the following statement:

“Upon receiving severe weather alerts today from the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), City of Moreton Bay has become aware of a delay in delivery by Council’s third-party provider,” the statement said.

“Council has escalated an urgent inquiry into this matter following assurances the system was working properly.

“The authority for all severe weather events is the BOM warning page.

“Until further notice please ensure you check the BOM for weather alerts.”
