Surprise win for star reader

Due to popular demand, the City of Moreton Bay’s Summer Reading Club returned in December 2023 and wrapped up in January 2024, with one student reader taking home a $50 book voucher.

Hercules Road State School Year 5 student Skyla won a voucher in the Summer Reading Club challenge after logging her reading time.

The Summer Reading Club encourages people of all ages to track every three hours of reading, whether it be a novel, a comic book or a recipe.

There are plenty of book vouchers to win, including a weekly prize draw. The Summer Reading Club was popular in 2022, with almost 5000 children taking part across the City of Moreton Bay.

Skyla read two books during the challenge and says she was surprised to win.

“I read Underdogs, which is a spy book and Monster Camp. I felt really shocked (to win), as I only put one entry into the box,” Skyla says.

Skyla’s mum encouraged her to join the Summer Reading Club because she’s always loved to read.

“I enjoy reading because my bedroom is really quiet and it’s just my dog and myself,” Skyla says.

“I have a really big and good reading area. I have been reading since before I came to school.”

Some of Skyla’s favourite books to read are very close to her heart.

“I really like comics, like the set of books Sisters, Guts and Smile by Raina Telgemeier, it really represents my family,” Skyla says.

“I am the eldest, I have a sister in the middle and my brother is the youngest. Now my family is bigger as I have a stepdad.”

While Skyla doesn’t know what books she will buy with her voucher yet, she will continue reading in the future.
