Teen’s generous gesture for cancer patients

Redcliffe State High School student Elleigh Murray has lopped her locks to change the lives of cancer patients.
The Year 8 student has been growing her hair for more than 12 years, and donated about 40cm of her hair to the Cancer Council’s Ponytail Project on her 13th birthday.
“My hair was really long - I had been growing it for so long,” Elleigh says.
“My grandpa died of cancer when I was young so I wanted to do something to help other people and in his memory.”
Elleigh says she’s never had a “proper” haircut – other than trimming the ends.
“It feels a lot nicer and lighter and much easier to manage and look after now.”
Welcome support
As well as donating her hair, which will be used by the Ponytail Project to be made into charitable wigs or sold to raise money for other cancer programs, Elleigh has raised more than $1400 for the Cancer Council Queensland.
“I’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone who donated to my fund raising hair-cutting event – there’s still time for anyone to donate,” Elleigh says.
“I am so grateful as all the money is going to such a great cause.
“I would also like to thank the lovely hairdressers at Serendipity Hair at Newport, who were so wonderful at helping me cut my hair.
“I donated 40cm of hair!
“I would also like to thank all those who supported me on the day of my hair cutting.”
