Walk Safely to School Day celebrates 25 years

National Walk Safely to School Day is celebrating 25 years of teaching road safety to children.
This year, the day will be celebrated on Friday, May 10, and encourages children to walk to school.
One primary school on the Redcliffe Peninsula has been participating for many years.
Kippa Ring State School Principal Kelly Elliott-Maskiell says the school has been involved in Walk Safely to School Day four years in a row.
“This is the fourth year our school has been involved. The Student Council has run it in the past and this year it has been organised by staff,” she says.
“The school feels it is necessary to place a spotlight on healthy habits for our bodies and our planet.
“Parents and students love seeing staff out and about supporting their children into the school gates. It helps to build a positive school community.”
Walk Safely to School Day founder Harold Scruby says there are many reasons this day is important for students and parents.
“Walking offers a great opportunity to remind children about safe pedestrian behaviour and recap the rules of the road,” he explains.
“Being outside in the fresh air creates a space in your day for mindful exercise. Walking and taking in the scenery around you creates a sense of calm that will set you up for the rest of your day.”
